Handbags have been around from as early as the fifteenth century. In those days, they were more of a necessity than an accessory. People in this century were mostly farmers thus carried seedlings and fertilizer for their farms. With the spread of religion in the fifteenth century, people used embroidered handbags to preach a message to their friends and neighbours. They typically consisted of one style and calm colours of black and brown. The coach handbag, one of the earliest handbags, was first made out of leather supported by soft cardboard. It gained popularity after the manufacturers started using cowhides, an idea that many women embraced. Louis Vuitton came up with his first designer handbag out of necessity in the 1800s. His work was to carry luggage for King Napoleon’s wife. Working for royalty meant that the bags he carried had to be stylish. He also had to make sure that the luggage reached its destination safely. Handbags became popular in the nineteenth century when people started travelling often especially for work. The sophistication of carriers’ handbag bearers depended on the work they did and the income they had thus the rich carried authentic designer handbags while the poor carried discounted handbags. |
