Buying and setting up an aquarium in one thing. Like any other house equipment, maintenance of an aquarium is half the cost incurred for the number of months or years you will be fortunate enough to keep the tank. The most important thing you have to keep in mind when you get your first aquarium is how well the aquarium will be maintained. Aquarium maintenance is critical for a healthy and beautiful aquarium. Aquarium maintenance requires more than just cleaning the tank and changing water frequently, though that is a necessity. Open fish tanks are subject to allow foreign objects in, some of which may harm the fish or dirty the water. It is recommended that you use a hood to protect your aquarium from external objects. The hood also protects your fish tank from dust. You should not be worried about air circulation because the hood has pores large enough for fresh oxygen. Some manufactures have even come up with hoods that have lamps that can provide both light and warmth for your fish. Regularly clean your tank. Residue from dead plants mixed with food particles and gravel, if not regularly cleaned may cause a health hazard to your aqua marine. Regular cleaning will also prevent the water from turning green. There are people with special aquarium maintenance skills that could help you clean your fish tank. This is recommended because of the special care that should be accorded to fish tank equipment; the care cannot necessarily be done at home. If you insist on DIY maintenance though, clean the tank using special sponges and special detergents that won’t harm the aqua life or corrode the tank. Regularly check the LED lighting or whatever lighting is installed in the aquarium. Replace the bulbs with the recommended ones every once in a while. Aquarium air pumps and filters should be checked regularly. Their tendency to attract particles that can block their operating systems makes them important equipment that needs to be checked regularly. Any hindrance to the functioning of these two will distort the ecosystem. Your neighborhood plays a part in maintenance. If you live in a place with a tropical climate, install an aquarium chiller to keep the temperatures cool. A neighborhood that has power interruptions may need a backup generator. Most of the equipment in the aquarium run on power and if for a while it goes off, chances of fish survival will be minimal. If you are out of town, an automatic fish-feeder could be installed. This device can be filled with the fish food for up to a week. Regular checking of the valves plus regularly replacing food in the feeder is required. Stale food can harm the fish. Aquariums need chemical products for maintenance. These include filter activator, used in biological filtration; plant fertilizers for your plants, and chemicals for cleaning the water. Among other regular cleaning procedures, these simple tips should help you sustain your aquarium and your aqua life. Contact an aquarist for more help on aquarium maintenance.
